Family Tree

I want to express my deepest appreciation to Arthur Hepler for his willingness to share with us all of his hard work on Patsy Cline's Family Tree! As one who has performed genealogical research in the past for my own family, I know the vast amount of work and time that went into this effort. This information will be of great assistance to those Patsy researchers who contact me from time to time.

If you need any further information, have questions on this subject, or have something you'd like to add to this page to help fill in the missing pieces, Mr. Hepler's email address is included below.

PATSY CLINE, (Virginia Patterson Hensley), was born at Winchester Memorial Hospital in Winchester, Virginia, on September 8, 1932. The family home was in nearby Gore. Legend has it that she was entertaining her neighbors as early as age 3! Her natural talent and spirit took her to the top of the country charts in 1962, and her style and popularity has never waned.

Patsy was born at her grandfather Sol Hensley's home in the little settlement west of Elkton, VA called Solsburg (named in honor of her grandfather, Sol Hensley).  Per Douglas Gomery, University of Maryland, Resident Scholar, Library of American Broadcasting: She did not actually grow up in Winchester, but many places. Her sister cites 19; I have found less. All were in the Shenandoah Valley, save Portsmouth, Virginia 1942-1945. She did not move permanently to Winchester until November 1948 (608 S. Kent).

Patsy signed her first recording contract in 1954.  Produced by Owen Bradley during eight year recording career to develop her own style and sound.  Initial guest appearance on Grand Ole Opry in July 1955, and became a member in 1960.  Her big hit "WALKIN after MIDNIGHT" in 1957.  She returned to Elkton in 1958 as the Grand Marshall of the town's Golden Jubilee Parade.  She signed an exclusive deal with Decca Records when her contract expired in 1960 with Four Star Records.  The songs she used were written by Carl Perkins, Hank Cochran, Mel Tillis, and Willie Nelson.  In June 1961 she was injured in a car accident in Nashville.  During recovery  "I FALL to PIECES" became her No. 1 country hit.  She criscrossed the US by bus, performing in a different city each night.  She was one of the first country stars to headline in Las Vegas.  She sang to a sell out crowd at Carnegie Hall.  She died with her manager in a plane crash during a storm.

In 1973 Patsy was elected posthumously to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and her reputation is on record as one of the major female vocalists of all time.

A bell tower has been erected in her memory at the Shenandoah Memorial Park, where Patsy Cline is interred. Several highways, including the Patsy Cline Memorial Highway, Route 522, and Patsy Cline Boulevard in Winchester, have been named to commemorate her life.

Church of Madison, PA.  Ralph was a 6ft. 2in. tall man.  Many a story was told of him, some true, some not so true.

To R. C. Newlin -- by Blanche Dorothy Newlin Hepler

From morn till dusk he tilled the sod,
And as he walked he walked with God.
And kids and dogs he loved to take along.
We helped him put the harvest out,
And suffered if there was a drought.
But still he pulled a joke or sang a song.
When people stole his corn or berries see,
He laughed and said "They need them more than me."
And never acted as they'd done him wrong.
If a neighbor asked for help, he always would,
Or, if he couldn't, got another man who could.
But seldom did he ask if they would right a wrong.
He learned quite soon in life God had a plan.
That every other guy should help his fellow man
But right was right and wrong was wrong.
When Sunday came, to church he took us all.
And leaned his graying head against the wall.
And helped to sing the tenor of the song.
When we with problems to our Father went,
He often told us that the Lord had sent,
These things to help our mental growth along.
He held his head in pride for no bill owed,
No subsidy he asked for seed unsowed.
And friend he met in every gathered throng.
And when he lay in death's cruel agony,
He never asked "Why has God punished me?"
He simply waited till death came along.
And when St. Peter calls him to the gate,
I'm very sure that Daddy won't be late.
And one thing sure, he'll take a group along.

        Notes for Pearl Gertrude Jellison:

My Mother -- by Blanche Dorothy Newlin Hepler

Very quiet, very shy, worring about the other guy.

Ill for years she lay upon her bed.

Asking for little, pleased with the same, neighbors very seldom came,

Memoirs dear she kept within her head.

Loved her family, sisters all, never once do I recall

Unkind word about a one she said.

Proud of her children, very proud, never did she brag aloud.

But once she called her life a golden thread.

                                Submitted by Ann Lieberson:

On Thornton's death notice, it is stated he was born in Hampshire Co.  I found some tax records for Mathias in Hampshire Co for 1789 which list 2 persons in his home.  So Thornton could have been born there. If you want to research Mathias' pension records Indiana, PA  His pension number is #S46396 and his landgrant number is #BLW1441-100.  He received a land grant of 100 acres in 1828 in Washington Co., PA  Almost all of the marriage and death dates and some birth dates came from the records at the Frederick Co., courthouse.  Other dates with the word "abt" came from the census.

Thornton's death record in Frederick Co, VA gives the name of his parents.

Grandson James H. Newlin's account of Thornton indicates that Thornton was reared on a farm near Finleyville, Wasington Co., PA  Thornton was an active participant in the War of 1812, giving valiant and faithful service.  He was a shoe maker by trade, at which he worked in addition to farming in the Shenandoah Valley, VA  Thornton and Sarah were the parents of nine children.
